The arrangements from Ford Pier are simultaneously ornate and sparse, transforming Jones’s intimate and often funny solo performances into sometimes sweet, sometimes daring, pop nuggets. It’s the intimacy that comes through as Jones explores the terrain of a non-traditional romantic relationships without ever raising his voice, giving the record an almost whispered conspiratorial quality.

Jones, who moved to LA right out of high school and found himself starring in a number of films before he could get into bars to play his songs, spent the 1990’s touring and making records with his band The Previous, a band that formed in the LA coffeehouse scene of the early part of that decade. Playing and recording with the likes of R. Walt Vincent (Pete Yorn, Liz Phair), Lili Haydn (P-Funk, Led Zeppelin), Julie Christensen (Leonard Cohen, The Divine Horsemen), Earle Mankey (Sparks, The Beach Boys) and a rotating crew of young cats on the rise and slumming veterans of the 80’s, Jones put out 7 albums and 3 EP’s under a variety of names.

& Andras Jones

Andras is not an artist who makes it easy for people to find him. Case in point. He put everything he had into a record that said everything he had to say, and then walked away from it for fifteen years to build a musical synchronicity format based upon his dead father’s dream seminars in the wilds of Olympia, Washington. That format is Radio8Ball, a show where questions are answered by picking songs at random and interpreting them like musical tarot cards. It’s a profound and therapeutic endeavor for and with songwriters, masquerading as entertainment featuring celebrities like Viggo Mortensen, Patricia Arquette, Tig Notaro, John C. Reilly & Andy Dick. You can find over 600 of these musical divinations wherever you find podcasts.

Check out the Radio8Ball episode where Andras was the musical guest performing songs by songwriters who have been guests on the show like Anya Marina, Mary Lou Lord, Bart Davenport, Vivian Cook, Colleen Green, Peter David Connelly & Josh Clayton-Felt.

All the while, “All You Get” sat there silently steeping to all but its author who knew, no matter how many other songwriters he held synchronistic space for, eventually he would have to come back to himself. And regardless how many new songs came unbidden, before he could give anything new to the world song-wise he had to finish the 20th century once and for all.

This is “All You Get”

Featuring Frazey Ford & Samantha Parton of The Be Good Tanyas on vocals, Barry Mirochnik of Neko Case on drums & the great Ford Pier of D.O.A., The Rheostatics & Veda Hille on everything from bass and guitar to glockenspiel and french horn.

Mixed by Grammy Award winning producer/engineer Sheldon Gomberg (Rickie Lee Jones, Ben Harper, The Living Sisters, Lucinda Williams, Jackson Browne) and mastered by Joe Gastwirt (Tom Petty, Miles Davis & The Grateful Dead).
